Gone for Pearls

Gone for Pearls’ pays tribute to Japanese ‘Ama’ – women free divers whose thousand-year tradition is actively being championed by The Toba Sea-Folk Museum for UNESCO intangible cultural heritage recognition. My research into their harmonious relationship with nature’s rhythms inspired this piece, which explores their profound connection to the marine environment through voice and body percussion alone. This sonic meditation on breath, water, and traditional knowledge was adapted into Japanese with translator Tomoko Oono, known for her work on texts by Kawabata and Murakami.
